JEWS AND JUDAISM IN THE AMERICAN WORLD OF “DIFFERENCE”:  THE 2014 BIENNIAL SCHOLARS’ CONFERENCE ON AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORY Emory University, Atlanta, GA JUNE 10-12, 2014 Sponsored by the American Jewish Historical Society and  hosted by Emory’s Tam Institute for Jewish Studies with support from the Knapp Family Foundation Please send proposals via email to SCHOLARSCONF2014@gmail.com by December 15, 2013 The 2014 Biennial Scholars’ Conference on American Jewish History will explore where Jews have fit in the diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and economic mix that has characterized American life. By exploring how Jews have been positioned and have positioned themselves in American society and in relation to other groups (including, but not limited to African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, and European ethnics), we hope to answer some of the following questions: How has Jewish experience compared to the experiences of other ethnic, racial, and religious groups in the United States? How have American policies and attitudes toward “difference” shaped Jewish status and self-understanding? What impact have they had on Jewish efforts to assert a distinctive identity and to reframe American conversations about diversity? How has the American racial and ethnic constellation influenced Jewish interactions and relationships with other groups? How have intersecting identities of gender, region, and class complicated questions related to ethnic, racial, and religious “difference”? Are Jews insiders or outsiders in American society? How have these questions changed over time and how have they been reflected in American and American Jewish cultural production?   The committee invites proposals for papers that engage any of the aforementioned issues and encourages the submission of complete panel proposals and roundtable presentations. Papers and panels that view American Jews in relation to other groups are particularly encouraged. As ever, the Scholars’ Conference committee also welcomes proposals on other topics related to the American Jewish experience.   All submissions must include a one-page (250 words) paper abstract, short (120 words) biography and contact information (including e-mail address and phone) for each participant, and a specific indication of technological needs. Complete panel proposals are strongly encouraged, and should include a brief rationale for the panel as a whole in addition to the abstracts for each paper. Graduate students completing dissertations may submit proposals accompanied by a letter of recommendation from their advisor.
