The Centro Studi Opera Omnia Luigi Boccherini of Lucca and the Societat Catalana de Musicologia of Barcelona, a subsidiary of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC), are pleased to invite submissions of proposals for the symposium «Music Criticism 1950-2000», to be held in Barcelona at the Institut d'Estudis Catalans from Monday 09 until Wednesday 11 October 2017.
This conference addresses the complex world of music criticism during the second half of the twentieth century, with particular emphasis on the relationship between music criticism and pivotal changes in politics, society and economics. As a consequence, it will encompass discourses surrounding concepts such as hybridization or cultural transfers used to analyse postcolonial processes or globalization. In addition, the conference aims to deepen the topic of music criticism by addressing some defining aspects of the period, such as the development of Jazz and music for Cinema, the growth of the music industry, and the new media that characterized the turn of the century. Of course, the central focus will be music criticism acting as a mechanism of expression, in the contexts of writing on music, including composers’ opinions, and musicological approaches.
