The Society for American Music is delighted to announce a new research fellowship that honors the achievements of Judith McCulloh—scholar, folklorist, editor, and folk arts advocate—who created and championed the “Music in American Life” series and the “Folklore in Society” series during her prolific tenure at the University of Illinois Press. She received, among numerous honors, the Bess Lomax Hawes National Heritage Fellowship and the Society for American Music Distinguished Service Award. The fellowship shall be given annually to support a short-term research residency at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. Awarded competitively to scholars at any phase of their careers, the fellowship may be used to support expenses associated with the residency, such as travel expenses, lodging, and duplication expenses at the center. The maximum award is $1,000.
The inaugural fellowship will be presented at the SAM 2016 conference in Boston.
