The Department of Music of the University of Pittsburgh invites applications from candidates of exceptional ability for a tenure-stream faculty position at the level of assistant professor to begin September 1, 2014, pending budgetary approval.
Position: Assistant Professor in Music with a focus in any area of Asia or the Asian diaspora
Qualifications: Candidates will have the Ph.D. by August 2014 and should present evidence of scholarly promise and demonstrated excellence in teaching.
Duties: Teach undergraduate courses and graduate seminars with an area focus in Asia, theoretical topics, and ethnomusicology; direct theses and dissertations; conduct research and publish; participate actively in the profession; share in administrative responsibilities; direct and/or supervise an ensemble.
We seek a scholar with specialization and fieldwork experience in any area of Asia or the Asian diaspora whose theoretical interests complement the expertise of our current faculty. The successful applicant will be able to work across sub-disciplines within the department and with colleagues elsewhere in the University to maintain and develop the departments strengths in music research, study, and performance.
The Department of Music offers the B.A. degree within a liberal arts school and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in ethnomusicology, musicology, jazz studies, and composition and theory. The Department supports numerous performing ensembles including African Music and Dance, Carpathian, Gamelan, Heinz Chapel Choir, Jazz, and Symphony Orchestra. The graduate program provides students with instruction in the histories, methodologies, theoretical frameworks and analytical techniques of the sub-disciplines, and encourages interaction across subdisciplines. Through this appointment, the Department seeks to strengthen its relationship across the university with other outstanding departments in the humanities and social sciences, and with university programs such as Asian Studies, Cultural Studies, Film Studies, and Womens Studies, as well as the University Center for International Studies.
