CFP: Production and Reception of European Music in the Eighteenth-Century Americas, Williamsburg, Mar 2014

CFP: American Society of Eighteenth-Century Studies (ASECS) Panel: “Production and Reception of European Music in the Eighteenth-Century Americas” sponsored by the Society for Eighteenth-Century Music (SECM)

ASECS 2014 full CFP: http://asecs.press.jhu.edu/

Williamsburg, VA; 20-22 March 2014

This panel seeks to bring a trans-Atlantic view to the composition, performance, and reception of eighteenth-century European musical genres and styles in the Americas (including English, French, and Spanish territories). This methodology includes such sub-fields as literary history, art history, performance and gender studies, as well as musicology. Indeed, when considering music produced and performed in the Americas it is important to also take into account aspects of economics and trade, geography, and the differing religions in each area. I believe such a wide-ranging topic would be of interest to many cohorts of scholars and would address the aims of the Society well.

Ideally, the four-paper panel will include one presentation each about English, Spanish, and French America and a paper that features the music of eighteenth-century Williamsburg as the fourth presentation. However, papers will be chosen by a group of scholars representing the SECM through blind review based on quality of abstract and coherence of theme and argument.
Please send abstracts of no more than 300 words to dlgoldman at u.northwestern.edu - with a deadline of September 15. Please send two copies of the abstract, one with identifying features (name, institution, address, phone number, email, and title) and one without. Both copies should include your AV needs. A small group of SECM members will select the papers and notifications will be sent by September 30 at the latest.

If you have any questions, please email me - Dianne Goldman (dlgoldman at u.northwestern.edu) - or call (847) 987-7795.
Feel free to forward this email to other people who you think may be interested in participating.
