The South African College of Music
invites applications for a
Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Musicology.
We are looking for a plainchant scholar to join a research project on the liturgical manuscripts from the church of Santa Cecilia Trastevere, Rome, in the Grey Collection of the National Library of South Africa, Cape Town.
The project aims to re-assess the liturgical manuscripts in the Grey Collection placing them in the broader context of their origins and their inclusion in a South African collection. Starting from an inquiry into the collection in general, it will proceed to look at the liturgical items focusing in particular on manuscripts prepared for and used at the church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, Rome during the Middle Ages.
Within the last 20 years scholarly views on Sir George Grey’s political activities as well as his contribution to culture and education have changed dramatically. However, during the past decade interest in the liturgical manuscripts of the Grey Collection has declined, while other areas of the collection have received attention from historians and literary scholars. In the light of these recent developments it is our intention to reassess the liturgical content and its place within the collection as well as to revisit previously identified avenues of research which have remained unexplored.
None of the previous studies of the liturgical manuscripts in the Grey Collection have taken the colonial context into account, focusing solely on provenance, codicological description and content of the sources. The project hopes to redress this lacuna and thus help to shape the understanding of South African colonial heritage. The diplomatic edition and study of the Santa Cecilia Legendary will arouse the interest of scholars in the field of liturgy and plainchant worldwide, as this is one of the few extant liturgical sources from the 12th century which is known to have been writtten in Rome and, moreover, for a specific church. The paucity of such Roman liturgical sources has been a major impediment to the historical reconstruction of Roman liturgical practice during the Middle Ages. Our work will contribute to the way in which scholars re-imagine the Roman liturgical past.
