Salary from £27,854 to £38,522 a year

The University of Birmingham invites applications for a Teaching Fellowship in Music. This is a junior position designed to provide assistance in departmental teaching and offer experience of working within a dynamic University department with a strong record of teaching and research.

The successful candidate will be expected to deliver a range of teaching and assessment activities and within her/ his own area of specialism, predominantly through allocated lectures and seminars. (S)he will be required to teach 15 hours per week, to undertake some administration, and to participate in the Department's overall contribution to the University. The greater part of the duties will involve assistance in first-year teaching and tutorials, as follows:
First-year harmony and counterpoint
First-year backup tutorials for the first-year music history sequence
Attendance at history sequence lectures and learning of associated needs for teaching backup classes
Contribution to the planning, design and development of course objectives and materials
Supervision and marking of undergraduate dissertations
Setting, marking and assessing examinations and providing feedback to students
Other duties as may become appropriate or desirable

There will be no requirement to carry out research for this position, though this is certainly encouraged. The postholder will be assigned a mentor within the Department and will have access to professional development courses as necessary.

The post holder should hold a first degree in a relevant subject; experience of teaching undergraduates and/or postgraduates in this subject area and proven fluency in, and ability to teach, standard pastiche exercises in Harmony and Counterpoint, and basic analytical techniques.
