Leo Bakst is probably the only one whose creativity was carefuly studied both in Russia and in Europe. In the first half of XIXth century theatrical stage became a real runway where actresses demonstrated the latest fashion trends and female part of audience followed them. Main propagandist of Paris fashion in Russia was a popular actress Maria Savina. A famous ballet dancer Maria Taglioni symbol of female grace of the Romantic era was the first who turned theatrical costume into a daily one.
During XXth c. theatre turned from a trendsetter to an atelier haute couture attracting the most talented and the most famous couturiers for creating scenic costumes and images.
