History, Theory, and Analysis: Interactions, Conflicts, Resolutions

Joint meeting of the Dutch-Flemish Society for Music Theory (VvM), the Royal Society for Music History of the Netherlands (KvNM), and the Royal Society for Music History of Belgium (KVMG)

Dates: February 28 - March 1, 2014

Venue: Royal Conservatory of The Hague (The Netherlands)

Deadline: November 1, 2013

The Dutch-Flemish Society for Music Theory (VvM), together with the Royal Society for Music History of the Netherlands (KvNM) and the Royal Society for Music History of Belgium (KVMG), will hold a joint meeting  February 28 and March 1, 2014, at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (The Netherlands). In the spirit of an event that brings these three societies together, we invite proposals for individual papers, sessions, and workshops that explore present-day and historical interactions between music history, music analysis, and music theory from cultural, pedagogical, and institutional perspectives.

Sessions, papers, and workshops that bring music and cultural historians into contact with music theorists are particularly welcome, as are individual contributions that seek to bridge the gaps that exist between the sub-disciplines of (historical) musicology and music theory.

Topics for sessions, papers, or workshops may include (but are not limited to):
a session or joint paper that engages a specific piece of music or a current issue in the field, one which involves the perspective of a musicologist and that of a music theorist, in an attempt to expose a point of conflict or of cohesion between the disciplines;
a session or paper that confronts conflicting perspectives between present-day musicology and music theory;
a session or paper that problematizes the separation between “music theory” and “musicology” in contemporary institutional structures, from both European and North American perspectives
a pedagogically-oriented workshop that shows how history, theory, and analysis can work together in the classroom
Free papers
Proposals for individual presentations of 30 minutes (including Q&A) should be no more than 300 words; session and workshop proposals of 60 or 120 minutes should be no more than 750 words. Papers may be submitted in Dutch, English, or German. In addition, each proposal should include a biographical note of ca. 150 words per presenter. Proposals and biographies should be sent as an MS-Word document to john.koslovsky at ahk.nl. The deadline is November 1, 2013. Presenters will be notified by December 1.
