CFP Envisioning Worldly and Otherworldly Pleasures in Music

Envisioning Worldly and Otherworldly Pleasures in Music
Imaginando los placeres de la música: entre lo mundano y lo espiritual

International Conference, IMS Study Group on Musical Iconography
Madrid, 29 November - 1 December 2017

The CFP is open to a wide range of subjects through the ages, including but not limited to the Iberian and Latin American experience. We invite contributions that approach images of music as a means of conceptualizing manifestations of enjoyment and pleasure, but also of expressing sensations, emotions, and beliefs (religious, spiritual, personal, and cultural). The ‘pleasures in music’ allow for multiple pictorial renditions in both a profane and a religious context: the sonic dimension of banqueting and feasting; music within a seductive ‘garden of earthly delights’; the mystical experience of the heavenly realms, mediated by musical means. Anthropological aspects related to the representation of body and gesture with regard to the production, performance, and consumption of music are particularly welcome. This meeting also aims to discuss about the main approaches, areas and horizons of musical iconography in the present, in its academic and scientific dimension.

Presentations (20’, followed by 10’ of discussion) in English, French, German,
Italian, and Spanish are accepted. Proposals for posters are also welcome, and the final program will allocate time for their presentation. Interested scholars should submit an abstract (max. 300 words) together with a short CV (max. 150 words) by June 30, 2017 to the following email: conferencemadrid2017@gmail.com

The scientific committee will select the proposals by taking into account their relevance to the overall theme of  the conference, as well as their originality and methodological approach. Participants will be notified by August 30, 2017.
