Music Theory/Jazz Artist

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO - Assistant Professor, Theory/Jazz Instructor, tenure track. Responsibilities: teach undergraduate common practice and 20th century theory, ear-training, counterpoint, analysis, and/or jazz theory; teach applied lessons; direct jazz combo or big band as appropriate; professional and creative activity as well as instruction. All faculty expected to serve on committees and assist in student advising and recruitment. Minimum qualifications: earned doctorate; distinguished record as scholar and/or performing jazz artist and jazz composer; significant record of teaching common practice theory and performance courses at the college level. Desirable: fluency in notation software; grant-seeking record; record of successful student recruiting and multi-disciplinary collaboration. Ideal candidate will help define Department’s curricular initiatives in both common practice and jazz curricula, participate in interdisciplinary activities, be able to work with students and faculty from diverse backgrounds, and participate in Chicago arts community while maintaining a professional career.
