EMR Special Issue on Music and Shape

EMPIRICAL MUSICOLOGY REVIEW
Call for papers: Music and Shape
The journal Empirical Musicology Review invites submissions on the theme of “Music
and Shape” for a special issue to be published in 2013. This call for papers is
stimulated by the conference “Music and Shape” held in King’s College London, 12-
14 July 2012 but is not restricted to presenters and attendees of the conference.
Scholars conducting relevant research are encouraged to submit an abstract of a
research paper and a proposal for open review to the editors of the journal by 30th
September 2012.
Empirical Music Review is an online journal which aim is to provide an international
forum promoting the understanding of music in all of its facets. In particular, EMR
aims to facilitate communication and debate between scholars engaged in systematic
and observation-based music scholarship. A special feature of EMR is Public Peer
Review. This means that a research article is accompanied by commissioned or
submitted critiques. More information about the open peer review process can be

Submission procedure for the special issue:
Expression of intent before 30th
of September 2012 including
• Abstract of main research paper. Name(s) and affiliation(s) of author(s)
• Names and affiliation of two reviewers who will write a public commentary /
critique
• Discussion points to be addressed in the public reviews.
Scope of the issue:
Any issue related to music and shape will be considered for publication. This may
include for example distinctive uses of the concept of shape by performers or
composers, a discussion of cross-modal associations in the context of music and
shape, an evaluation of visualisations of sound or performance.
Preference is given to articles with a clear empirical component – whether including
hypotheses testing, systematic observations or model building. Theoretical and
speculative articles are welcome provided they contribute to the forming of
empirically testable hypotheses, models or theories, or they provide critiques of
methodology.
