ANNOUNCEMENT: European Sound Studies Organisation Launched

On Friday, July 14 2012, the foundation of ESSA – the European Sound Studies Organisation – was announced. The committee behind the organisation consists of sound researchers from Germany, England, France, The Netherlands, and the Nordic countries.

The aim is to provide an international, interdisciplinary and interprofessional organization for promoting the study of sound by providing a forum for knowledge exchange, for conferences, for research encouragement and development of projects, and for information.

ESSA will host and mediate all kinds of understandings of sound and research into sound. Researchers doing artistic research of various kinds and researchers doing sound studies on the basis of traditional academic disciplines like, say, anthropology, musicology, and media studies are equally important to the development of ESSA as a research network.

We invite all scholars and artists, students, young researchers and experienced authors working with one or more dimensions of sound to join ESSA in order to provide the space to foster the international, interdisciplinary and institutional development of sound studies in the coming years: online as well as in conferences, summer schools, workshops and international research projects.

To join the ESSA, send a simple mail with (a) your digital & postal address, (b) your professional occupation, (c) your institutional affiliation, and (d) if freelance: your main area of expertise, to: join atsoundstudies.eu

ESSA has come about as a consequence of the tremendous growth in sound studies in diverse research cultures all over Europe and worldwide, an interdisciplinary and international group of researchers – connected by various research networks, conferences and workshops in the Nordic countries, in Germany and all over Europe – has initiated this international organisation with the aim of bringing together sound researchers and sound artists of all kinds.

The founding members as of July 2012 are: Karin Bijsterveld (NL), Barry Blesser (US),  Michael Bull (UK), Mark Butler (US), Marcel Cobussen (NL), Erik Granly Jensen (DK), Anahid Kassabian (UK/US), Jacob Kreutzfeld (DK), Tellef Kvifte (N), Charlotte Rørdam Larsen (DK), Ansa Lønstrup (DK), Morten Michelsen (DK), Holger Schulze (GER), Mark M. Smith (US), Jonathan Sterne (CAN/US), Ola Stockfelt (S), Jean-Paul Thibaud (FRA), David Toop (UK), Heikki Uimonen (FI), Simon Zagorski-Thomas (UK).

You will find more information about ESSA at http://www.soundstudies.eu

CALL FOR PAPERS

Word and Music Studies: Ninth International Conference
August 7–10, 2013, London, UK

SILENCE, ABSENCE AND ELLIPSIS IN LITERATURE AND MUSIC

The International Association for Word and Music Studies (WMA) takes pleasure in announcing its Ninth International Conference to be held in London from August 7–10, 2013.  The conference will take place in Senate House, University of London, in association with the Institute of Musical Research and the Institute of English Studies, which are both institutes of the School of Advanced Study (http://www.sas.ac.uk).

Scholars active in all areas of Word and Music Studies are invited to participate in the London conference. In addition to papers addressing the conference theme, the conference will include two further sections: “Surveying the Field” and “Word and Music Studies Working Papers”.

Previous conferences have been held biennially in Graz, Ann Arbor, Sydney, Berlin, Santa Barbara, Edinburgh, Vienna, and Santa Fe, with conference proceedings published in the Association’s book series, Word and Music Studies (WMS). The Proceedings of the most recent conference in Santa Fe, Voice in Literature and Music, are due to be published early in 2013. It is anticipated that the Proceedings of the London conference will be published in a further volume of WMS.

As at former conferences, the “Surveying the Field” section will feature papers airing general theoretical and methodological questions intrinsic to the scholarly field of Word and Music Studies. Overviews of recent developments and new directions are welcome; however, papers in this area should not address specialised topics.

The “Word and Music Studies Working Papers” section will consist of shorter papers on any subject in the field of Word and Music Studies. Emerging and younger scholars are especially encouraged to present their work in this section to an expert audience. Successful papers will be invited to be published in the “Word and Music Studies Online Research” section of the WMA Online Newsletter.

Papers addressing the conference theme and “Surveying the Field” should be 30 minutes in length. “Working Papers” should be 20 minutes in length. Please submit abstracts of no more than 300 words, and attach your current location and academic affiliation, via email to Walter Bernhart ( walter.bernhart at uni-graz.at) by 30 September 2012.

Members of the Programme Committee are Walter Bernhart (University of Graz, Austria), Michael Halliwell (University of Sydney, NSW), Suzanne Lodato (Indiana University, Bloomington, IN), and Robert Samuels (The Open University, UK).

The local organizers in London are Robert Samuels (Department of Music) and Delia da Sousa Correa (Department of English), of The Open University (Milton Keynes, UK). ANNOUNCEMENT: Call for reviewers, MLA Notes music reviews

Dear colleagues,

I wanted to let you know that I am taking over the position of editor of music reviews for the journal Notes.

I am currently looking for reviewers, so if there is a recent edition of music (published in the last 3 years or so) that you would be interested in reviewing, please get in touch with me at the email address below.  I plan to give priority to scholarly editions (parts of historical sets or collected works that would normally be classified in M2 or M3), but I'm certainly happy to consider other things as well.  Also, if you are interested in reviewing but don't have a particular publication in mind at this point, please send me a copy of your C.V. and let me know about repertoire for which you have an interest, and I will see if something is forthcoming.  Every month, I receive a number of lists of new publications, so I have a good idea of what is available.
